Would you believe it? It is January 27th already! But rumor has it that the 2012 Walnut Beach Art Strolls, in its 4th year!, will begin next week on Thursday, February 2nd! OMG! it isn't a rumor it REALLY is going to happen....This beautiful mild weather will make it easier on walking the Avenue to Broadway - no ice and snow...

Firehouse Gallery is opening for 2012, accepting work this weekend for the upcoming exhibit "Still Life." And there is more in store as the year progresses...READ ON....

February's Artist - Paige Miglio - A Precious Gift

"I have long loved classical art and have many books on scientific renderings from the 19th century as well as the collected works of various artists. Finding beauty – and more importantly spontaneity within the realism of studied subjects is my personal challenge. My paintings, but especially my murals are often filled with hidden insects or other surprises. I love working within partitions, and love to tackle paneled surfaces; creating scenes seen through frames of the paneling, much like classical diptychs and triptychs from ancient and classical religious works. Everything seems....“precious."

By careful study of nature and leaning on basic drawing foundation skills, every drawing and painting is a new exercise. I always do sketches by hand over and over until I am confident in my proportions and composition, whether my subject matter is portrait, object or landscape. Only once my drawing has been established, do I open up and allow myself the freedom to build marks and color, in paint or graphite.

My technique, as I get older, seems to grow. I am not satisfied by “doing one thing and doing it well.” But each style feeds the other. My mural work is the total opposite technique to working in watercolor, both by sheer size - and application of paint; with watercolor you generally work from light to dark, while in acrylic/latex (or oil) you work from dark to light.

But everything for me comes back to drawing.....I love to draw, to problem solve, to move objects and subjects within the scene – as I am often called to do for portrait work – and remake them into a new reality. Drawing is cathartic. When I draw, I feel my fingertips are moving across the object, into the scene and wrapping around my subject. Drawing makes me whole."

Paige Miglio finds the beauty in all defining aspects of the world around her. It is as if she scoops up what she sees, places it in her heart where her love envelopes it allowing the magic to form and begin to flow down her arm to her fingers...she states it quite eloquently '...I feel my fingertips are moving across the object, into the scene and wrapping around my subject...," a precious moment, a precious gift that has been given to us.

Each piece captures the essence of her subject. When viewing one can see the glint in the eye of the toddler as she looks back over her shoulder, the determination in another as he/she is making their way to get water, or digging in the sand, feel the contentment as the cats "sunbathe" in the window,

one can hear the motion of the water as the waves hit the surf listening to the foam dissipate, and see the light from the moon dancing on each wave as each wave races to the shore,

or feel the mist from the fog spray your face as you picture yourself standing on the deck of the boat while it is moored due to the fog all the while hearing the water lapping against the side of it.

Paige thoroughly enjoys life! She teaches each of us a lesson every time we speak with her, see her finished work or even watch as she paints a mural on the side of a building as she did on "The Bridgehouse Restaurant" alongside Bill Meddick. She teaches us that we should take the time to see the beauty and grace of what has been given to us and we take for granted each day....the smell of coffee brewing first thing in the morning, the sun peering through a window from the east as it rises showing us another gorgeous day is about to begin; even the cloudy rainy days are full of wonderment, the snow as it gently, quietly falls blanketing the earth creating such a silence you begin to whisper when you speak. You can even find wonderment in the material things such as the car that cut you off...the design of it, the mechanics of it, and yes even the driver for he/she is truly a work of art....

But Paige has natural abilities which she is able to hone in on each "object" finding the precious wonderment, the lustre of what makes everything surrounding us full of life...We have been blessed with a precious gift.

Stop in the different shops as you meander down the Avenue! Enjoy all of what each business has to offer!

Fire House Gallery has an exhibit that has an array of different art work. They have a gift shop too! Think about that someone special you are looking for to give a unique gift to. Fire House Gallery will also be hosting ornament making from 4pm to 5pm. A Tree Lighting will take place on their patio at 6:00pm.

...reflects my inner emotional landscape when I am creating my abstract and fantasy pictures.
My belief system is based on the Chinese philosophy of Chi; the vital energy force of Yin and Yang (male/female, positive/negative,) which flows through everything in creation. When we are in harmony with the natural energies around us, we become aware of and feel the oneness of everything.

I use the colors of the Chakras, as well as, form and movement to express this life energy and duality.

Inspiration for my fantasy pictures happens when a shape, color or image catches my attention and …just like in a Rorschach inkblot test, I “see” a story waiting to be painted. Loretta Mack, surrealist, delves into the energy's field pulling out a scenario that she puts onto canvas. The energy envelopes her, her mind begins to envision a scene, and as just as mystical as Chinese philosophy is, a creation is formed. The connection continues as one views her work. You can see and feel the energy enveloping you. You don't get 'sucked' into the painting, the energy just surrounds you and you for that moment it is as if you meld with the energy seeing why Loretta created what she had.

During this surreal time in our lives, a surreality, global warming and the economic issues affecting us; having a grave effect on some, you feel as if you need to get lost in another surreal place to counter it, to balance hoping to find an answer to our woes. Loretta has that ability to balance us in the twixt and tween of things. Some might move with the energy while others question the work, but it does give one a harmonious balance so the surreal world we are living in is perhaps more comfortable and seems clearer so we can find the path to leave it bringing more sensibility and direction to find whatever wealth it is we need.

Energy is almost misty, wavy, invisible but can be felt and yet Loretta seems to have been able to capture it defining it. The vibrancy of each color, the defined "outline" that encompasses it - capturing it in a cage so to speak. It shows we can harness it, we can control it, we just need to know how to. That is what Loretta is teaching with each work. By harnessing this "surreal" form we can do anything.

"Joyce Densmore a Jewelry Engineer"

"My work background is chemical and mechanical engineering, but I've always had an artistic side to balance my engineering - whether it was sewing, smocking, painting porcelain dolls, watercolors, or designing jewelry. With my jewelry, I started working mainly with pearls. I love the organic look and feel of different types of pearls mixed with just about any stone. I branched out to working with copper, brass and sterling after taking a metal-smithing class - cold working metal -- bending, hammering, cutting, rolling (I have this very cool rolling mill!) - I find that metal work is a good blend of art and engineering."

Even though Joyce has a rigid scientific background, her engineering abilities have created jewelry that is elegant yet precise, has an air of sophistication yet methodical, and can be casual yet orderly. You can see her mind working as you put on the strand of pearls, or the "waves" she creates out of copper and sterling silver using iridescent iris tube beads accenting the piece. Her choice of hand carved bone designs add that exquisite oriental flavor to some of her works.

November's Artist is "Drawn" to Painting...

"I'm 'drawn' to painting. Not a philosophy - just a desire to paint - an emotion, a feeling, an intuitive moment that sparks the energy taking control of the brush and/or palette knife and before I realize it, the piece takes on a life of it's own. You ask Renee, she'll say "It was completed two days ago - you can stop working now." Compulsive Creation? Maybe, but that's not for me to know for I just paint.

November's artist, Rick Senft has a connection with his brush and/or palette knife that he is able to put on canvas what he sees, from photos of his own or from his mind's eye. He takes one on a trip through the Caribbean, the Pennsylvania Amish country, or Walnut Beach using his different styles and techniques of painting.

Rick's sixth sense, his intuitive feeling he gets, "draws" him to see a scape that yearns to be placed on canvas for others to enjoy. Each subject calls out to him as he walks by, he, hearing the calls, he listens to that one subject that brings his emotions to the top, the feelings ready to overflow on to the canvas, he grabs a brush, a palette knife and "IT" begins...his strokes, deliberate, yet almost melodious as he goes with the flow of the energy that has taken control....When finished, he, surprised at what he sees, starts to fine tune it instead of letting "IT BE." The reason for Renee to say "...you can stop working now..."

October's Artist: Elizabeth B. Wright - A Breath of Fresh Air

"I have always been an artist, but my training for life has been diverse. Currently a certified art and social studies teacher, I teach high school sociology and psychology. Leaving a full-time teaching load has ended a career of teaching civilizations and world cultures. This is OK but what to do with all of those artifacts?

My work is every day and that is my view of art, every day, everything I see, the colors, the sentimentality, the message even though private. Every day I fight the urge to stop important activities and just paint, or cut up photographs, or run around and gather materials and to just begin something meaningful to me that must be created, at that moment. I am often compelled to create something from my heart that speaks volumes, at least to me. Never enjoying painting as an assignment or theme, I express my love for a vibrant whole by attacking in layers of richness, then pattern and then trying it all together with my beloved photos. Is it collage? Perhaps. But to me it is a work of art, mine. When someone falls in love with one of my works I find exhilaration and a special connection that person.

My life has also been centered in social work, clinical and outreach. Having worked in those agencies serving women and children, my feminist vein is always highly charged. I consider myself a community activist. My art has a voice and if noticed or heard, that is my reward. I am very sentimental, philosophically positive, an activist, feminist, and usually full of "great ideas." Translating this into art makes my paintings full of stories, history and possibilities.

Time has limited my constant involvement in many areas. At this time I am dedicated to reviving the visual arts of the MFAC, and then, revisiting a commitment to open space preservation in Milford. I know that I am on the right track when little ones paint just for me, little presents of paint on paper, because they know!"

Ms. Wright, a multi-faceted woman, has an exuberance for life, this is the precursor to her art. Her creations show this exhilaration, her exuberance, her zest for life and her love of art. For to her, art is an expression that leads everyone to a different world, a different place that only the imagination can take you if you allowed it to.

The fluidness she has in each piece creates your mood for you. One can see the movement through the strokes of the paint. In one painting it is as if the wind is blowing leaves around and you find yourself grasping hold of your sweater as to protect yourself as the wind blows by. In her still life series you can see the veins in the vase, the thorns on the roses almost smell the scent of each flower.

The vibrancy of each color she uses reflects the energy she carries with her and can be felt when she enters a room....like a rush, a breath of fresh air!

Ms. Wright's concerns for the environment is shown in her work, the open space she strives to protect for others to enjoy in the future. She meticulously labels each tree she paints with its correct name making sure the viewer knows each and where these trees are found. You know you have connected with her energy that somehow absorbed into each brush stroke, each painting when your senses go reeling as you look at it.

Autumn has fast approached us. The trees are just starting to change their color, but with all of the rain and heat we had so late into the summer, you wonder if they are going to change at all...but you know what ...October's Art Stroll will be happening on Thursday, October 6th.

Enjoy an evening around Walnut Beach area via horse and buggy! Patti Clark (artisan of SoBoBo) and her husband of Maple View Farms, Orange, CT will be joining us that evening...WEATHER PERMITTING that is...if it rains, the rides won't be taking place.

But you know the route, just head to FIRE HOUSE GALLERY, 81 Naugatuck Avenue and see the four seasons change before your eyes! Their new exhibit is "Four Seasons" and the opening reception begins at 6:00 pm. A juried show so awards will be given...don't forget to choose People's Choice Award!

Meander down to SOBOBO and check out October's Artist, Elizabeth B. Wright's exhibit. The vibrancy of her work, the energies, a breath of fresh air you feel is stunning. Besides Elizabeth, we have new artists Warren Bryant, Simone Doroski, Kimberly Pisco, and Karen Macker...new artisan, a wood turner - Steven Fortier. Steven works in reclaimed wood only! The wood carvers, Bill Gallagher has returned with his Santa Clauses all hand carved out of bass wood as well as William Brill. The intricacy of each stroke in the wood is amazing. PAINTED YOU is a wonderful place to stop at...see the beauty in the work...no it is not tatoos, it is body painting, very different...there is also the possibility of making arrangements for face painting at an upcoming event you may have....

September's Artist - Sheila Pite

"My background is in Art Education, BS from Southern Connecticut State University and Art Therapy, MS from the College of New Rochelle. I also studied ceramics, drawing, and painting at various times before and after my formal education at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven, CT.

I worked as an Art Therapist, mainly with a geriatric population. Since I had found doing/making art to be therapeutic for myself, this was a very satisfying profession for me.

My work is usually in clay or mixed media, and reflects my feelings about women, family, the environment , and life in general.

I have been exhibiting my work for the past twenty years in various Connecticut galleries, and at the Castle Gallery at the College of new Rochelle in New York, The Connecticut galleries include: Bennett Gallery in Fairfield, Firehouse Gallery in Milford, Gallery 53 in Meriden, Farmington Art Center in Farmington, City Lights Gallery in Bridgeport, 22 Haviland St. Gallery in Norwalk and the Westport Library among others.

I have created some of the work for this show over the last couple of years. I combined my own photos of some of my favorite people or places with recycled materials, paint, graphite, ink, and/or oil pastels. The recycled materials that presently appeal to me are shredded paper, discarded cuts of wood from places like Hope Depot, screening from my broken screen doors, and chicken wire purchased for other projects.

I often find myself fencing in images of women, or depicting places usually off limits to me, or altering photographs that I have taken to depict a slightly "off" image. I believe, from my experience in Art Therapy, that these voiceless expressions actually say a lot about who I am, and how I view the world - especially the many layers of MY world."

There is still much that one does not know about Sheila, she is a humbled person. Her work displays this attribute she hides. When you are viewing her work you find that something stirs inside you. You don't know exactly what it is, but it makes you connect to exactly what she states. You walk away complete because you understand, a knowing comes over you that you are at peace, a sense of tranquility because you just know....what that is in our every day mundane lives you ask? It isn't there it runs deeper, soul searching, soul settling.

One understands the "voiceless expressions" that are hidden in each piece -- resonating with each of our souls, making that balance happen that sense of tranquility spoken about before. A better understanding of what is not there, the unknown becomes known, that knowing keeps you balanced...an assured feeling that you thought lost is returned. You can see this in "I Can See Clearly Now" seen below. This piece is haunting, ghost like, yet it resonates with your soul, understanding what is today for some women throughout the world.

Irene....the Unruly, Unwanted Guest

SOBOBO faired very well during Irene's visit as did Firehouse Gallery....We are open usual hours....

UPDATE: NO ART WALK THIS MONTH due to the effects of Irene's stay at Walnut Beach...truly an unruly guest if anyone has ever seen!....You know she is the type of guest that forcibly invites herself to visit! Some nerve! wouldn't you say??!!

You know perhaps, the best way to put all that has happened these past few weeks, i.e., the earthquake and Irene, aside for a moment is to join us on Thursday, September 8th....

Firehouse Gallery, whom also faired well, will be having their opening reception for their new exhibit "Humans" on Thursday, September 8th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm....

and....even though the art walk will not be taking place, meander down to SoBoBo as we have September's Artist - Sheila Pite's opening reception starting at 7:00 pm and will end when the last person leaves....

Walnut Beach Creamery will definitely be open that evening as perhaps Lazy Lobster and Alfa's Jolly Jug....

Poets D'Antonia and Sara Eliza Johnson will be exhibiting their writings. Both are amazing, their writings leave you breathless! Take a peek below...

D’Antonia is adjunct professor teaching at Quinnipiac, Yale, and Southern Connecticut State University. She is an accomplished poet and photographer, who after a ten year hiatus has come home to hone her passions. Her work has been published in Verdad Magazine, El Ojito, American Poetry Anthology, Beanfeast Magazine, and includes a self published poetry compilation, entitled, “No One To Blame But Yourself. “ Several of her poems have also appeared on-line.
D’Antonia is working on a book of poems and is the CEO of two internet businesses, currently scheduled to go live in January 2012—stay tuned…; excerpt:

Sara Eliza Johnson whose poetry has appeared in a variety of places online and in print, including the New England Review, Shenandoah, Iron Horse Literary Review, and Best New Poets 2009. She is the recipient of a Rona Jaffe Foundation Writer's Award, a Winter Fellowship from the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown, a work-study scholarship to the Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and an AWP Intro Journals Project Award. She holds a BA from Cornell University and an MFA from the University of Oregon.

Legacy's Life Takes Us on a "Third" World Excursion

"I have been looking through a lens all of my life. The way I see the world drew me to a career of making movies that spanned 20 years and taking pictures since I was twelve.

The camera never lies.....it is a journey of discovery and understanding, of honesty and soul. I celebrate feelings of wonderment and splendor as I view reality through a lens.....a moment speaks, the shutter clicks and alchemy takes place.

The paradox of the lens removes me from what is taking place on the other side as it connects me to what it touches inside myself. As the stage of life grabs my attention, time is frozen, my heart melts, and the story is told.

The legacy in my pictures is my perspective on life. Legacy's life on me? Someone will need to take my picture...."

Joanne's discovery of the "third" eye through a camera's lens has opened more than one door to a "third" world that we hadn't expected. Each legacy that is formed from peering through this third eye definitely has an impact on you.

Joanne's connection with the subject through the lens continues to the viewer, a string of life that connects the three together - perhaps the String Theory working? This can only explain what is experienced when each piece seems to come to life; an osmosis, a chemical reaction of the energies takes place and you become one - finding yourself standing inside the photograph - experiencing what was captured at that one moment in time.

As you look at Resting, you find yourself tilting your head to look at Buddha face to face - almost as if you will lie down next to her.

Make sure you bring your snorkel and flippers because you just might need them as you enter The Firehouse Art Gallery, 81 Naugatuck Avenue, at 6:00 pm. You will find yourself exploring the ocean with a new exhibit “From The Sea,” that was juried by Bridgeport native, painter and graphic designer, Bob Perkowski.

Mr. Perkowski, a Paier School of Art graduate, majored in fine art and illustration. He started his own graphic design company in 1991. An award-winning painter, he is a signature member in the American Society of Marine Artists, The Hudson Valley Artists, The Northeast Watercolor Society, The Connecticut Watercolor Society and The New Haven Paint and Clay Club. His love for the sea and New England is reflected in a majority of his recent works. He paints seascapes, still life and landscapes. He is represented by The Gallery at Firehouse Square, New London, CT.

Artists entered works of art that are of or pertain to the ocean and the variety of life it supports, either real or imaginary.

Kate Davoli Takes You on a Jeweled Journey

"When I design a piece of jewelry I consider first the color that most describes my mood and then a complimentary color.

Texture and form is also a consideration and for me to create a piece that I truly love the texture and form must co-inside with the color and that creates the feeling of the design.

When I am in a quiet state the colors tend to be soft tones and usually monochromatic, however, I truly love the elegance of silver and black and so I will design often with those colors.

For me the journey is the thing and not the result. I approach all art in this way."

When trying on Kate Davoli's designs, you can see the object of her creative process. You can imagine in your minds eye her working on each piece of jewelry as it is designed and ultimately created.

"Looking Is The Key"- Janet S. Ruskin, July's Artist

"Art is education is history. I paint, I have to paint. I have always painted. Looking is the key. Looking is a necessity with no time limit.

I paint on shaped stretchers which I build. The shapes choose themselves and are realized upon completion.

I paint with high tech Acrylic Polymers. Components such as "silica, "65% high gloss," "thickener" and "dispersion," (colors.) These, when mixed, form paint that has many characteristics; high gloss, flat, transparent, opaque, quality of thickness, pigment content and hue.

I never know what a painting will look like until it is finished. Each painting teaches me, directing my thoughts to the next painting thus growth through looking.

Painting is a physical and mental activity. There is no way to describe the feeling one gets looking at a body of work years in the making. For me, the growth I see from piece to piece is my catalyst to future mental growth, so I paint.

A respected colleague and alum of the Art World, Janet Ruskin contemporary artist, passed in 2004 at the age of 45.

During her life she made statements using her artistic abilities. Using the avenue to express what was being suppressed for so long. She tried to tell people what she knew was truth but couldn't express it in words. By using her natural ability she was able to let others know. But in retrospect, one wonders if those truths were looked at only as a work of art, technique, subject matter and so and not statements...For instance, at the age of 17 she created "Lady In Red." A provocative piece for such a young person. As you "look" at it you can be "educated" to see truth of the "history" of the mocking of woman, the metaphors that are used in today's language to put down, and yet you can see her stance that woman is strong...(see below) "Lady In Red" has recently been acquired by The Housatonic Museum of Art.

"Looking is the key." How true. Isn't that what we do on a daily basis? Looking, looking, looking. Whether it is looking at birds in the tree outside your kitchen window first thing in the morning; looking as we drive to our destination; looking at the stars and moon at night; looking at ourselves in a mirror. These are looks that take place throughout one's day, perhaps a few times a day. However, when looking at art work some of us do not take in what is there, some of us decide immediately "it isn't good art" - is it because the piece struck a nerve, our inner core? Think about it!

That is what Janet had been saying all the while she created..."Art is education is history..." think about it for she is telling us to LOOK. She continues to teach us to LOOK because there is more to a table than a top and four legs - the molecules, the energy that compose it; there is more to a shape than what pleases the eye - the angles, the curves; there is more.... And, if it struck your inner core perhaps it is bringing to the forefront something you have forgotten about - history; perhaps it is teaching you that there is more to life than what is now - education; perhaps it is time to stop, look, listen, enjoy life...

Each piece stirs something inside you - whether it is your mind - thought; your sight - an optical illusion; your soul - inner core. When standing in front of "Canopy" one can feel and see the shade from the leaves enveloping you, giving you a sense of peace.

Look at "Sway" - you find yourself going with the flow as it moves across the canvases.
And, "Hook", you tend to want to try to unlatch your clothing from being snagged.

When viewing "Boogie Man - 9/11/01" your thoughts go to that infamous day as your eyes see different events unfold and you feel in the deep wells of your gut, your soul, the fear and sadness. Not many artists can accomplish that as Janet has.

Her pieces she created for 9/11 are so stirring, chills run up your spine. Janet had submitted a proposal for Ground Zero during the call for artists.

In the letter she received from Mayor of New York City it states "...While redevelopment of the site is still in the early planning stages, we would like to maintain your proposal and make it available in a permanent archive at the New York City Department of Records and Information Services. At the appropriate time, this material will be shared with the official memorial selection panel for consideration. We believe this archive will become a unique "collective public memorial" that will commemorate the strength of our Great City in a meaningful and enduring manner."

To review her written proposal and see her concept for the 9/11 site visit SoBoBo during the month of July, you will see that parts of it seemed to have been intertwined with the final design...

Janet had a following. She had become quite accomplished and achieved more than most artists do during their life - from 1978 to 2003, Janet had had 19 solo shows; from 1979 to 2004 Janet had had 40 or so group shows.

Her works are placed in permanent collections in Patterson Museum, Patterson, NJ; Mid-Hudson Arts and Science Center, Poughkeepsie, NY; Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY; Long Island University, Southampton, NY.

Most recently, The Housatonic Museum of Art, Housatonic Community College, Bridgeport, CT has acquired her work - The Museum has one of the most significant collections of any two-year college in the country and includes works by master artists such as Rodin, Picasso, Matisse, Miro and Chagall. Don't forget to visit the Museum to see Janet's works - "Slice", "Shattered - 9/11/01" and "Lady In Red."

Create Your Own "Abstracts" or Geometric Designs...

Thursday, June 23rd is when you can create your own abstract, although it may be an invisible line that goes from one point to the next. Walking the line, so to speak, will create a geometric design.

Well, you can first go to Lazy Lobster have a nice dinner, then go up to 81 Naugatuck Avenue to Firehouse Gallery for 6:00 pm. After enjoying the opening reception for their new exhibit

"Abstracts" meander down Stowe Avenue to Park Avenue. Once on Park head down towards the water and stop off at Walnut Beach Creamery for a taste of ice cream to clear the palate.

When you are there you will see a sign in the window next door announcing a new unique gourmet cupcake shop who will be our new neighbor soon! Are we growing!

Then head to Wild Expressions across the street and enjoy the scents of the flower art that is there. You might even want to pick up a bouquet of flowers to take with you. Enjoy the music, the treats that are offered. Before you leave don't forget to look at the art by local artists that are there.

“I have a dream to start a social group for the welfare of women and poor people when I go to India in our native place. I thought beads would be good because jewelry will live as long as woman will live.

We recently moved to America as a Family. I, a Computer Science Engineering graduate, thought to learn something from America. Going through the Google search I came across the word bead jewelry. I was able to find someone local who teaches this - that is when I decided to learn.

My passion is to create new designs based on Indian jewelry with a Western touch. Culture, nature, color of the beads and the mind to create new designs are the things that put a piece together. I like to work with seed beads, Swarovski crystal beads and wire jewelry as well.

I have been beading now about a year and half. I bead everyday, continuously learning and try different designs. I am happy while I'm beading because it relieves much stress, I feel relaxed and satisfied beading, and I can concentrate to finish a new project.

Sylvia touches the soul of culture instead of the soul of an individual. By doing so she does keep the soul of woman alive, because as we know the matriarchs of each culture are the ones who keep the life cycle going. So perhaps her dream to help the women and poor in her own native land will come true, for she put it so eloquently, "...jewelry will live as long as woman will live."

"Looking Up from Underwater" - scratch board - by William Brill

"I loved learning about trees and the various woods they mill to us! I graduated from an agricultural college where I had learned to respect Mother Nature and her off spring - plants, trees, insects, bugs, animals. I worked for Bartlett Tree Experts as a climber/salesman putting to use my studies but yet learned a lot more about the life of trees and their composition from being hands on.

Learning and dealing with woods and the carpentry I became curious about wood carving. About seven years ago, I had attended class under the instructor Ray Wach. His teachings and guidance spurred me to continue. My first carving was a knife handle using an old hack saw blade. I was hooked! I continued taking lessons to "hone" my abilities.

I have carved numerous pieces; from bears to birds, dogs to fish and frog; from squirrels to reliefs. For these art pieces I have won numerous first place ribbons at various wood shows
and have sold several pieces as well. Because of winning several first place blue ribbons, several second place red ribbons and two bests in show I officially earned the title of Master Carver.

Since my wood carvings depict certain species true coloring had become the next step to achieve. After many attempts, I have been able to turn my carvings into pieces that are so life-like many think they are taxidermy pieces! That is when I knew I had achieved my goal.

Painting each piece had spurred me to attend art classes with Ron Grobes, water colorist, to perfect my abilities in coloring and fluidness of color. I still attend and am enjoying every moment.

After all I have accomplished throughout my journey to becoming Master Carver which I thoroughly enjoyed, I must say my passion for the art of wood carving and now painting has grown becoming more than just a hobby. They have become part of me or I should say I have become part of them."

Master Carver William Brill, a man of strong stature, is soft spoken, a gentle giant who teaches you the need to respect and honor our surroundings. You think he might be Native American or an Indigenous to North America because of his teachings...he just might have been in another lifetime. The wood from the trees he uses is part of Mother Nature...he reminds us it was alive at one time giving of itself the much needed oxygen we need to breathe, giving us protection from the elements and it once was the home of certain wildlife. Trees give us more...once cut down they are used for building homes, paper, even making toothpicks. Many don't know either that when forest fires happen we lose all of that and more...however, those burnt tree trunks that are left are utilized as utility poles throughout the country...perhaps overseas too.

Mr. Brill examines each piece of wood he chooses. He prepares it before he uses his tools on it. He remembers the tree standing tall, he respects tree and its connection to the cycle of life, he honors tree by giving thanks for its strength, its austerity, its life by breathing life back into each piece of wood he uses. With the stroke of his tools, he carves ever so carefully - with a slight cut to give it a softer tone; with a deeper cut to give it 3-D depth; working in the round so his subject can be seen from all sides. His wood sculptures come alive, passing on respect and honor for Mother Nature and its off spring - tree, animal, plant, fowl - which he portrays in each piece to the person who looks in awe at the finished artwork.

In honoring his beliefs in respecting and honoring our surroundings it is as if each subject's spirit becomes Mr. Brill's muse, directing him to take care as he ever so passionately brings it to life for Spirit is etched, carved into each piece with each stroke of the cutting tool. There are times Spirit nudges him towards a certain piece of wood that captures the next subject he will be honing into a work of art bringing it to life. Mother Nature's way of thanking him for passing it forward to us, teaching to R E S P E C T, and honor what surrounds us. Now it is understood when he said "...They have become a part of me, or I should say I have become part of them."

An amazing man, for not many know he owns an exterminating business. One would think a bit of an oxymoron since he respects Mother Nature and her off spring. But no one understands that he will not destroy certain environmentally friendly species of animals according to Connecticut State law, and will re-locate them to a space where no building is allowed, where they can run free with no worries...a space up north in Connecticut...a space that borders a friend's farm...a space that is reserved by the state as Open Space. His R E S P E C T and honor of Mother Nature's off spring continues...However, there are those environmentally friendly species that CANNOT be relocated due to the possibility of the spread of disease.

April Showers Brings May Flowers.....

And yes they have! May is downright bloomin! The trees had buds less than a week ago, and look at them now! Tulips are growing tall reaching to the sunlight! Crocusses have come and still are growing strong! Irises will begin soon! and Yes! We see GREEN GRASS instead of the white blanket! We thought SPRING would never arrive...

The Fourth Walnut Beach Art Stroll of 2011 begins with a very appropro themed exhibit "Botany," a wonderful scientific term for plant life - a beautiful term at that, will be hosted by Firehouse Gallery, 81 Naugautuck Avenue. The reception on Thursday, May 19th at 6:00 pm introduces the new season with a display of wonderful works by local artists. A must see!

Sally Ann Endleman works with precious, semi-precious gems and stones as well as a variety of metals to create wearable art - jewelry. Her intuitiveness guides her to find the unusual pieces creating classic jewelry that can be worn with any fashion style from the past and even those that haven't been designed yet. Her embellishments add the flavor of how one feels when wearing her creations. They are classic yet faddish. They are flamboyant yet complimentary. They add that final touch needed to complete an outfit. She has an uncanny ability to know what is wanted by the art collector, the consumer.

Some pieces are made with African stones. Others with a variety of Jaspers. Some with Asian coins and even little charms. Hand blown glass medallions add eloquence to others.

Sally Ann Endleman, May's Artisan, has had many journeys throughout life as Frieda Howling did, as we all did and still are. A pragmatic woman she traversed through her art. A potterer she had created many unique pieces that could not be duplicated. Her molding of the clay, her glazes she used was her own style. A style that resembled the ancient worlds yet it was modern. Her work was on display in many galleries and museums. You must know that when she was promoting her work, she had to schlep from business to business marketing on her own. This was before craft fairs appeared in the mainstream. You might say she and a group of friends were the forerunners of that circuit. Setting up many events so everyone had the chance to view the art form and perhaps go home with a piece of art.

Sally Ann taught and held symposiums at Calhoun College at Yale University. For her work she was honored the title Fellow. She held symposiums about women in business and "Celebrating Women's Creativity" at, then, Quinnipiac College.

She felt it was time to move on after her many accomplishments with pottery. Sally Ann never stayed with the same avenue of art. She always changed. She not only created her works she also had owned an art gallery, Endleman Gallery, on Chapel Street in New Haven. She opened Endleman Two in Branford which was to be an accessory store but ended up selling clothing which were designs of up and coming young fashion designers.

Besides her own entrepreneurial achievements she has won many awards. Sally Ann was bestowed a Fellow of Calhoun College - Yale University, was Noteworthy Woman of New Haven County, and Top Retailer of American Craft, a national award that is chosen by artists/artisans across the United States. Her work had appeared on many a cover of magazines and sold in stores throughout New York. Sally Ann Endleman is a multi-faceted woman who strived for more and acted on her dreams becoming very accomplished.

You can see Sally Ann Endleman's creations on display at SoBoBo for the month of May and beyond, as she is a mainstay of the gallery. You might just find that gift you were looking for for that special someone.

"The key elements in my works are the use of color and design. Whereas many of my earlier works are colorful geometric abstractions, my new works offer the viewer a fresh style of painting that is more fluid and spontaneous.

Life is a journey and starts when we emerge from the protective womb. Throughout our journey there are many events, discoveries, and exciting encounters. Our journey takes us beyond the realm of a peaceful existence on earth to the unknown in space. We are a mobile society and see ourselves moving from the tranquil rural life to the promising urban existence. We are a restless people -- we want to travel, visit and seek to understand other cultures, and explore nature -- trees, caves, seas, and science.

Frieda Howling is worldly, an amazing woman. She has the uncanny, amazing ability to show us that it is up to us to use what life gives us in a way that will be beneficial with a positive outcome. Her message "Perception is in the eye of the beholder...only you can decide what to do with what was given - happy or sad, good or bad, beauty or ugliness." Your own interpretation, finding the meaning - the reason or reasons for it happening. When she sees that one has realized there are more than just one interpretation - giving one food for thought, making one wonder, provoking the mind to seek out more she knows in her heart she has accomplished her mission as an artist/teacher.

Many don't know her other creative sides: a teacher and writer. Mrs. Howling taught Art at the Lebanese American University in Beirut (LAU) where compiling much research culminated into "Art In Lebanon, 1930-1975" which was published by LAU Press in 2005. The chronicling of paintings and sculptures of the first Lebanese contemporary artists is beautifully written with a dialogue that as you read you can hear Frieda's voice speaking each word. Did you know that recently there was a bit of a controversy regarding the first Lebanese woman sculptor and it was through Mrs. Howling's book that had proven the claim to be wrong? How amazing!

What a Way to Chase the "Blues" Away...

As we entered into the Spring Solstice we found ourselves wanting change from the cold, dreary, "blue" days of Winter...and yet the cold is still here...snow is still haunting us... ...Well, there is a cure that we can all do to chase those "Blues" away! Just join in on Thursday, April 14th as we meander about Firehouse Gallery - 81 Naugatuck Avenue - taking in the new exhibit called (how appropriately) "Blues." The evening begins at 6:00 pm where awards are given and engaging discussions are abound. The artists/artisans challenge for this exhibit was "...to focus on work primarily using the color blue, reflecting the mood, the music genre, or anything relating to the definition of blue." This event will be juried by visual artist Susan Scott of Cheshire, CT. She was educated at Central Connecticut State University where she achieved her painting and art history degree. She exhibited in galleries and venues both locally and nationally. Well if there isn't cause for celebration now is the time to! Enjoy a "chaser" of the blues by strolling done the "Avenue" to SoBoBo Gallery - 42 Naugatuck Avenue - where the Exhibit Reception for April's Artist Charles Bell is happening and you can enjoy the fruits of the Art of Brewing by a surprise guest! Mysticism or Universial Flow...

"I have always been interested in art. Going wayyyy back to kindergarten to my 1st classroom art course through elementary school and then in high school having the opportunity to drop "Study Hall" I was "drawn" to join art classes Painting and Ceramics. It was then that it fully captured me.

Watching countless hours of Bill Alexander with his "almighty brush" had a big influence on me, both of them. Lots of trial and error with some paintings coming out 2 inches thick with paint, but I kept at it until it was perfected.

Some of my work that was done in high school and in the early 1980's had been put into storage along with some of my property. Unfortunately, didn't keep up on the storage bill...and to make a long story short, most of my work was sold at a garage sale by the landlord. But you know, there is no reason to be sad, I wasn't, I was in awe....WOW someone bought some of what I did...cool.'

I try to find time to paint but usually end up painting in those awkward hours of the day or night. It's as if the timing of when I paint is important for when I want this to happen, it seems "this and that" take over...so I have no choice but to go with it. Because of this happening, every painting I try is an experiment for me in light, color, texture as well as the surface I paint on."

Charlie's own experience best explains his work. Without realizing it he, by capturing that one moment in time, "...those awkward hours of the day or night...," harnesses the universal flow of energies that direct his hand and paint strokes. The same energies are filling his mind with what colors to use, how the light should play in each painting, how much paint to apply to get the textures and how when in the end you see faces, figures, that seem to pop out at you. By him saying "this and that take over...so I have no choice but to go with it..." is what the Taoist teachings tell us and Benjamin Hoff writes in the "Tao of Pooh" and the "Te of Piglet." So, scientifically, it becomes an experiment to him, but is it really? Yes, you can watch him work, but is it he who is painting? That is why one doesn't know if it is truly mysticism or universal flow that he is connected with that allows him to create the exquisite work.

When seeing his spacial work entitled "Past Days," one can actually see the "universal flow", the spaciousness of where all our energies can connect with if one so chooses to even if one believes in it or not. When looking at it you can see and feel the "myst" softly touching your face, you can feel your feet softly touching the earth, almost as if there is no gravity. It is like he is putting the unknown space odyssey we one day will take into visualization and we might ask "is this what it is like when we die? Or "is this where we came from?"

But as our feet return to Terra-Firma, Mother Earth, we see Spring budding as we decent through the "mysts" planting our feet firmly on the ground as if we are landing in Charlie's "April's Birth". The physical side, the matter of fact side, something we can touch, feel, see that we are real.

Sharing Space, Corroborating...Who Would Have 'Thunk' It?

Sharing Space...Do you remember having to share your bedroom with an older or younger sibling? Do you remember how at times you ended up sharing the bathroom with them? Do you remember when you had to share your seat with them because there always seemed to be one seat short wherever you went? Or, even the same blanket? Do you remember how during those times, even if you at that split moment - you rolled your eyes and thought "do I have to?" Yet, when you look back at those times, you remember with a smile those exact moments enjoying the memories because you remember the GOOD, FUN times....

Well, hold onto those smiling memories.....

Sharing space was at one time a thing that everyone tried to run away from, because "each of us needed our own space." So, houses were starting to be built further apart, the size of the lots started to become larger to bear the size of the new larger, spacious houses. Businesses became competitive buying each other out so their space in the market would be on top...a greedy situation wouldn't you say?

Well, hold onto those thoughts...

Corroborating became a word of deceit, "corroborated with a witness to tell the same story.."; a word of fear because some didn't know what would take place because of the corroborating of others to take down the character of someone, to commit a hostile take over of a business...a greedy situation wouldn't you say?

Well you can dispel all of those feelings of needing your own space, of needing to be number one in the market, of fearing the actions of others trying to "take you down..." because there are two very special people who have disproved all of those thoughts, and feelings....

March Winds Were Definitely Encircling...

"I began beading as a resurrection from sitting and not talking to my husband who had been undergoing problems from Parkinson's disease. I have always loved the fine seed beads and decided to see what I could come up with. I made my first necklace from black and brown matte seed beads and I was hooked.

I have made numerous necklaces and numerous designs. Every time I start out I always choose the beads I am going to use in making the pattern. I embroider for a while, then look, at the necklace to see whether I like it. Many times I do not like it and then I have to start again with the beads. This is the most important part to beading a necklace. You have to like what you are making! Choosing the pattern, design comes later. Choosing the color of the beads is the hardest of all. After you have chosen the beads you are on your way to making someone happy."

Winter Halts, Spring Has Sprung Forward - Myth or Legend

As Winter comes to a halt, Spring has definitely made every effort to show us her resilience. Look at each tree, you can see the buds starting to appear; daffodils are sprouting as is the crocuses. And all of this is neither myth nor legend, it is truth, it is fact, it is the Law of Mother Nature.

And yes, the Second Art Stroll is fast approaching us at the same time as the Spring Event Mother Nature is displaying.

Firehouse Gallery at 81 Naugatuck Avenue will be presenting an exhibit entitled "Myths and Legends." The exhibit will be juried by Susan Clinard, sculptor and art instructor. A graduate of University of Michigan, she has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Palette and Chisel Academy of Art and Gallery 37, and currently is an instructor at the Creative Arts Workshop in New Haven.

Accepted entries will be exhibited from march 10th to April 7th. The Opening Reception will take place on Thursday, March 10th starting at 6:00 pm.

March Winds Play A Prelude As They Usher In Spring...

"Self taught, I come from a long line of artists. It has been around me all of my life. On retiring I decided to take up oil painting. I love it! My oil paintings seemed to get a good response so I continue. It is a great expression of my love of nature. My paintings have been shown in Firehouse Gallery, SoBoBo, and recently at Gilded Lily all in Milford, Connecticut. In December of 2010, I had exhibited with Traveling Art Gallery - T.A.G. during its stay in Bridgeport, Connecticut. My "Audubon" painting won Peoples Choice at Firehouse Gallery. Also, "Hemlocks" had taken Honorable Mention at Firehouse Gallery. I participated in "The Doors of Milford" in 2010. My door and other pieces were shown at Tranquility Spa also in Milford."

As you peer around Marcia's opened door "Mulberry on Oak" you can hear a whisper taunting you to walk through. One would think "Alice in Wonderland?" No, no, after all Alice fell down a rabbit hole...remember, as the winds blow, many odd things take place...

You quickly get to your feet, when all the while you have been standing gazing at Marcia's paintings...for, when the winds blow change is afoot and magical things happen; whirling through the trees and around buildings playing a prelude to Spring.

You can smell the "Farm Fresh" vegetables that were just picked, and "Apples I & II" make your mouth water has you can hear the crispness when someone bites into them. You can touch the wool on "Shabby Sheep."

Before you know it, you come upon "Winter Trees" and "Hemlocks" bringing you back to reality, to the cold, blustery winds of March..."Oh, wait" you say, the winds are ushering in Spring, blowing the clouds in for April Showers so that May Flowers can bloom...bringing you full circle to "Days End" in the "Butterfly Garden" your senses reeling with the floral fragrances mixed with the smell of the earth...guiding you once again through the opened door "Mulberry On Oak."

You step back and wonder, "where was I just then?" "Was that truly a whisper I heard?" "Who or what guided me through?" Was it perhaps Monet, or was it truly Marcia Delaney-Wiltsie sharing the wondrous splendors and colors she sees every day which we take for granted; or just March Winds playing us, stirring up the energies, creating this magical event?

Marcia's style is authentic. Some may say a bit primitive, others feel definitely impressionism, and yet others you hear speak of her as possibly a student of Monet. Marcia's talent is blooming, her brush strokes are deliberate, yet each one has a sensuous flow allowing our own senses to become intertwined. That is how we were able to hear the whisper of each brush stroke, that is why we followed the sounds, that is why we smelled the fragrances of the garden, that is why we thought we were swaying in the hammock, hearing the children giggling, the dogs whimpering. That is why we felt the cold snapping us out of the mythical sense we were experiencing, bringing us back to now.

It is said that when the winds blow change is afoot and magical things happen...so it is safe to say we just experienced "The Prelude To Spring..." as we are being played by the March Winds; and for sure it is one we won't forget.

Another Angle: Order Converses With Chaos Instead Of Being At Odds

"Sculpture consists of rigid rectilinear gridded cube containing curvilinear element.

The grid has been used historically to represent and analyze space since the Renaissance and the invention of perspective. The free form line plays against this predictability. Order converses with chaos. The left brain talks to the right brain. Both qualities contrast each other yet make a composite whole." -- Marian Doherty, 2011

Marian presents another angle to ponder. When viewing the sculptures we must view them as conversations instead of energies working against each other. The fluidness is what connects the communication linking us to the understanding. Instead of being at odds, it creates a current of going with the flow.

The "Tao of Pooh" and the "Te of Piglet" both by Benjamin Hoff explains this theory by showing Taoist wisdom through A.A. Milne's characters and their actions. They show that fighting the opposites, one can eventually drown in the enormity of the whole; but, if we would not go against the chaos and go with the flow of things, one would ultimately overcome what is going on by using common sense, taking action - acting on it instead of reacting to it, thus communicating, conversing.

One must remember ORDER ALWAYS COMES OUT OF CHAOS. At times it might not be what we want at that moment but it is one step closer to the final outcome we are seeking.

Mother Nature Designs A Floor Plan...

Have you ever noticed how beautifully quiet it is outside when it snows? The sound of silence...

The weather has definitely reared its ugly head as they say, but is it really ugly? Mother Nature designs a wonderful floor plan...a tree to the right with bushes along the edge. Flowers running parallel to the bushes about 12" apart. The flowers, bulbs, are in hibernation awaiting their "Debutant Ball" introducing Spring. Some bushes are still green with red berries, it's as if they are aware they are the "pantry" for the animals that need sustenance during the winter. Floor plans of the "interiors" of Mother Earth.

The snow falls, ever so quietly and softly, blanketing the earth almost protecting it and yet giving sustenance to the flowers that lay buried beneath the earth.

If looking at Mother Earth through a frame - the interior of a room would seem to appear that was so eloquently and gracefully designed by Mother Nature.

Ushering in the New Year with Mother Nature designing in a frenzy, we tend to become housebound and a little cabin feverish....we begin to look for something extra to do, even if it means we must go outside, and bear the sub-zero weather to break the fever...

...Join us with Firehouse Gallery on Thursday, February 3rd at 6 pm, as they celebrate opening for the New Year of 2011 with a new exhibit entitled "Interiors" and the first Art Stroll of 2011!

"Interiors" will be juried by Rosemary Celon-Gordon, an artist and Milford resident, is a graduate of the Paier School of Art where she studied interior design and architecture. Her work has won various awards and is in private collections throughout the United States and Europe.

The theme "Interiors" will take you to places where you never thought you would be...READ ON!

Opening Reception for "Interiors" starts at Firehouse Gallery, 81 Naugatuck Avenue at 6pm on Thursday, February 3rd and ends at 8 pm. Continue your evening by strolling down seven doors on Naugatuck to SoBoBo Art Gallery where February's Artist, Marian Doherty is exhibiting. See her work and listen to her explanation of time and space (interiors of sort.)

When you arrive at SoBoBo you will find a surprise guest - award winning chef, Scott Wiseman, owner of THE LAZY LOBSTER. He will be serving hot soup that will warm your insides...the warmth will travel from your nose to your finger tips to your toes.

February's Artist, Marian Doherty, Floats Us Through Space & Time

"Every one of the pieces starts with a flat base that grows from the center outward. The form leaves the base plane and whirls through space and time.

Some of the pieces are built with cubes: one cube influencing the next in a domino effect, as a stage of growth stems from the one previous. All involve dynamic tension and change.

While welded metal is considered a manly, industrial medium, these pieces are decidedly delicate. The play of lines is intricate. Each angle is unique (and sometimes quirky), yet at the same time, essential to the whole."

No need to try to understand space vs. time, and/or string theory or quantum anything for Marian's work puts a 3-D view, a tangible side to something that seems to be invisible to the naked eye. The fluidness of each piece is structured so one can see how the development of, for example, a cyclone looks from all eight (8) angles. This view can also explain Indigenous Americans' belief in Nature and Great Spirit - the eight directions of Wind N, S, E, W (positive influence) and NE, NW, SE, SW (negative influence) and its power, its strength as the eight directions come together creating a cyclone, or a tornado and simultaneously explains it scientifically.

The interaction between space and time is experienced on a daily basis as our lives intertwine with everything...that's right everything. It is said we are at a lower vibrational level so we can be in physical form, tangible - but it makes one wonder about what can't be seen, the higher vibrational levels such as time flowing through space, past-present-future. Some say all three are simulataneously happening but yet what you read a few seconds ago is already in the past. Sounds confusing? Well, it truly isn't. Just look at Marian's sculptures and find the answer.

Marian Doherty, sculptor/painter, will be exhibiting her work at SoBoBo for the month of February. Her work can be seen as surreal, but is it really? Only you can decide. A must see.

There is excitement in the air! The elves are working feverishly to get it ready with the wielding of their hammers, the buzz of their saws - what beautiful sounds they make! The walls are painted, the floors were put in on Wednesday, the first coat of finish was laid yesterday. - For SoBoBo is moving to its new digs!

You can't miss it! The new cedar shake building with the green wrought iron railing which, by the way was done by one of SoBoBo's artisans - Jon Westberg! He designed it with a sail boat in the center and if you look very closely you can see a person sitting in it!

"I am a self taught artist, as such, I experiment with technique, style and material going beyond the boundaries that can confine artists.

I primarily work in metal, combining recycled metals, found objects and some new materials. Much of my artwork is made from things that without my intervention would end up in a land fill. In this time of environmentalism, finding beauty and purpose in discards and being able to reconstitute them into objects of art, drive much of what I do. Except for an occasional preserving clear coat, rarely is anything ever painted. Materials are left in their original state.
Materials are heated, bent, hammered, welded, brazed or soldered in the course of being reconstructed into sculpture.

I enjoy making pieces which bring a smile to the viewer, that invite being touched, that look natural in the home or outdoors."

Thanksgiving Today

We all know the history of Thanksgiving in the beginning. But, what is Thanksgiving today? We all sit at the table of food a plenty; passing around the mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, and turkey. "Pass the corn please." "Pass the rolls." "Pass the butter." "Pass the bacon..." Bacon? Some do put bacon on top of their turkey when they roast it....so, yes, "please pass the bacon...."

These economic times have weighed heavy on us...unemployment near double digits (there are many who cannot collect unemployment anymore and we mustn't forget them); jobs are a plenty, however, one cannot survive on $8.00 per/hour; people are losing the roof over their heads; now that our job market has moved overseas and those citizens are becoming affluent we look to them to perhaps buy airplanes, and certain cars from us which are pretty much all that is left. Our clothes, toothpaste, foods, etc. are imported. Labels don't even tell you where things are made anymore - it has been changed to "distributed by:" no longer "made in." Warning labels are placed on jewelry stating "don't allow children 14 years old and younger wear this piece" because of the lead and cadmium levels....oh, yeah the heck with everyone else...So, we ask "What do we have to be thankful for?"

We are thankful for being alive, for having the ingenuity to create, for being able to develop ideas taking them to the level of products and services, for wheeling and dealing with "in kind" method of payment, for living in a country that allows us to think and create and develop and become sustainable -- we did it once before we will do it again!

Each of us may be experiencing at least one of the horrors of the economic issues taking place, but we learn of someone else's situation and we realize we should truly be thankful for what we have and we then pray for those who have nothing and see what we can do to help them.

We always were taught about the atrocities in other countries - the lack of opportunity, the lack of work, the poverty levels more than double digits, the lack of food, pure water, of the death and diseases -- that we should pray for them and if we can, help them, i.e., U.N.I.C.E.F. Do think about the countries where the companies/corporations have gone to as they take advantage of others and reap more in profits - the people, the companies/corporations' new employees, don't have the inalienable rights to think, to create, to develop ideas because of the oppression they experience on a daily basis...and think about it - putting food on their tables with the menial wages they are making is a miracle to them! In an ironic almost satirical fashion, our prayers have been answered though with great sacrifice, but they have been answered.

We did it once before we will do it again! Sure our way of life has changed, for some dramatically, but you know what?, we need to remember "Order Always Comes Out of Chaos."

So, as Thanksgiving arrives tomorrow, remember who you are, what you can do and how you can make it happen for yourself and others because its only then you will be able to "Bring Home The Bacon" so that it will be passed around at your Thanksgiving table. And be thankful that you are able to!

Many Blessings as you bow your head in Thanks for what is...

Be thankful for what you have,
for you can have less.

Be thoughtful towards others,
so they may not go without.

Be hopeful of the future,
so we all (including Mother Earth)
will be healthy and prosper.

Firehouse Gallery is entertaining the viewers with a new exhibit "Small Works" - nothing larger than 18" x 18". This is the last exhibit for 2010! It takes place Thursday, November 11 from 6pm to 8pm. The works will be on exhibit until December 16th with Firehouse Gallery closing for 2010 on December 19th. Firehouse Gallery will re-open with a new exhibit - "Interiors" - on February 3rd, 2011.

Emily Bett, a well-known painter, printmaker and potter in the Greater New Haven area is the juror for this exhibit. She studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, has a BFA degree from the University of Chicago, an MFA in printmaking from Southern Connecticut University and attended graduate studies at Carnegie Mellon University.

When Firehouse closes for the evening, walk down to SoBoBo Art Gallery to see a wonderful new exhibit that will WOW you...

This same man has raised families, helped strangers, built hospitals and schools. The world I see is filled with curiosities that have existed since the beginning of time. As an artist I can only record what I see. I can not create what is not there. That is for the dreamers. Mixing medias is my choice to capture the controversy. If only we all take into consideration the observations that Allan sees, perhaps we would be more endearing to our fellow man, to the environments and Eco-systems, Mother Earth. Maybe then we can see ourselves sitting down at the Thanksgiving table together giving thanks for all the creations set before us.

Allan's work is from the heart, he sees what most cannot because of his observations and he understands more than some the issues and climates of different societies of the underdeveloped nations as well as here in the United States. He brings to us in art form that same knowledge, hoping those who view it will grasp the meaning behind the images and perhaps pass along the message. All the while recycling, reusing, reducing which in turn he is renewing what was left into a work of art!

It is becoming more and more eerie at Walnut Beach as we approach Halloween! One wonders "What could it be?" It seems rumor has it that Walnut Beach Witch is slowly making her way here to Walnut Beach! That explains the scarey and spooky eerieness!

Some seem to think she's going to pop up out of nowhere, you know the twixt and tween of things - and scare the living daylights out of us...others feel she is going to be here on Sunday, October 31st arriving promptly at 6:00 pm! WOW!

Yes, Walnut Beach Witch will be arriving promptly at 6:00 pm but there is more going on!

Listen to this, shhh! it's a secret - you must come in costume! AND starting earlier than 5pm Jamie the Clown is going to be on hand to perform her beautiful face paintings on those who wish to have it done! Costume photos and Music!!!

New this year a PUMPKIN PARTY! Bring a carved pumpkin to light the parade as Walnut Beach Witch, arriving at 6 pm sharp, leads the way!

Be sure to bring bells to ring and scare away any bad spirits along the way!

"As an artist we all want approval in what we do especially from our inner self. I feel that I have surpassed those limitations, opening in myself another way of seeing the world. I have many influences in my life (from nature and experiences to personal journeys) which reflects in what I have accomplished. From what my dad has taught me growing up and his death, finally being able to gather the strength to carry on.

Being an artist is an important aspect of my life it is what makes me, me. If I can get people to talk, maybe shock them a little I feel that I have accomplished what I have set out to do.
Not everyone is going to like what I do, and that is alright with me. I am not here to please the whole world just myself. That is part of being an artist, to make people think maybe reflect on their own fragility, to do something with their own life in the process. It is not about making the money but being able to go beyond what I am capable. I feel I have accomplished that and much more. I will be forever grateful for what everyone has taught me along the way and hope to pass that on as I continue on my journey."

And low and behold we have Halloween! The "holiday" which started as a protective instinct of parents to have their children dress-up as the ghouls and goblins so the real ghouls and goblins wouldn't be able to tell the difference, protecting them from being stolen and taken into the mystical world...Trick or Treat, a saying, eludes to the fact a trick will be done to you if you don't give a treat...a little bit of intimidation wouldn't you say? but all in fun.

Even though the Art Stroll has already passed, Firehouse Gallery has a new exhibit entitled "After Dark" which can be a variety of different subjects. Juror, Don Garbera had chosen the winners. He is an artist from Stamford, has been a professional photographer and business writer for forty years. He was an editor of Technical Photography magazine, published many articles and created a number of magazine covers. Presently his favorite mediums are oils and watercolors. Don is a graduate of Visual Art, NYC, the Institute of Photography, NYC, and the New School for Social Research, NYC. His photographs and paintings have been included in numerous group shows in the New England area where his works are in many private collections. Although he is retired he still produces photos for a photo stock house in New York City. And you can find his work at SoBoBo!

Visit Firehouse Gallery! See the creations! They are opened every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from Noon until 5 pm. You might want to check to make sure on the closing time, since it is getting colder and darker the Gallery might be closing at 4 pm instead.

During September we celebrated a day off from work - Labor Day, kids returned to school, parents had at least 6 hours of freedom a day, summer ended - but that's okay, fall and winter sports are about to begin, and the beginning of the holiday season...

All of these are things we take for granted on a day to day basis and we tend to put them in the back of our mind because they are recurring every year.

However, there is one day that is beginning to be (with only local news reporting) and will perhaps be forgotten as Pearl Harbor Day (2,896 casualties) has been forgotten, as the end of WWI (37 million casualties), WWII (over 60 million casualties,) the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (approx. 199,000 casualties and doesn't include those who designed the atomic bomb, who gave the orders to drop the atomic bomb, or who did the actual act) Korean War (4 million total casualties - 336,00 Americans,) Vietnam War (6.5 million casualties - approx. 600,000 Americans,) The Gulf War (approx. 300,000 casualties - 183,000 Americans,) and most recently the end of our military presence in Iraq (over 150,000 Americans & other coalition members and over 1 million Iraqi civilians - all the casualties of the Iraqi civilians are not the direct result of our military - the majority are due to the terrorist attacks on our military and areas that hold more civilians claiming collateral damage due to their own hatred of the United States) which it has been eerily silenced.

It will join the words in the history books as everything else and those words are not all telling...

The day was named Patriot Day in honor of the fallen citizens of the United States and other countries who were victims in the 9/11 attacks on the Pentagon, on AA Flight #11, and the Twin Towers. The East Coast will never forget, however, others throughout the United States may not have the same memories, the same feelings about what happened since they weren't close to it...It is almost like the earthquakes on the West Coast which are intense and devastating, but on the East Coast we have never felt the true impact of an earthquake, surely we have had tremors but not the devastation as on the West Coast...Tornadoes are another event we couldn't imagine until recently...

All who have perished in one form or another because of 9/11 will be remembered in their families' hearts and through history books; but will only be remembered by the masses when we all take part in the memories. So as you visit SoBoBo this last weekend in September and until September 30th, you will view an exhibit in homage to those heroes who probably never thought they would be considered heroes in their wildest dreams...

As Sheila Pite's sculpture "Re-Membering" shows the shock in Figure's face as she looks up to the Towers re-creates every one's emotions that day. As she gazes up, she also looks at "5-Star flag" by Allan Dudek which represents the five branches of our military as well as their courage and bravery. To Figure's right stands "Stars & Stripes In The Round" hand carved by Robert Pike.

To her left one can see a mezzo tint by Genna Riggi of "A Soldier's Silence." Yes, the title alone lends you the knowledge of how brave our military men and women truly are. Looking at it one can see flags in the distance, a bit tattered, but flying proud.

As Figure would glance down to her left you can see the quilt "Clouds & Stars" by Marilyn Cocking with hands emerging out of the dust from the devastation "Help Me, I Am Here" or are they saying "Please Raise Me Up To The Heaven's For I Will Never Be Saved." The image so striking, hitting you. One hand white, one hand black - "Life's Shadows" by FranCesca beautifully done! So many interpretations, Are they the hands of the same person; are the hands representing that we truly are One; are the hands representing for this exhibit ALL the ethnicities and races that perished that fateful day? Only you can decide, for the interpretation is always in the eye of the beholder.

SoBoBo Art Gallery & Consortium is bringing an unexpected change to its exhibit space by introducing “Artist for the Month.” Beginning this month of August, Jan McLean, artist/teacher, will be exhibiting her mixed media pieces. She uses gel image transfers, textures, and acrylic faux encaustics to create a world one is drawn into. You find yourself engulfed with the warmth of her creations, wanting to touch them, to feel each piece.

"Through paint, paper, fibers, fabric, transfers and a "let's-try-this" approach to mixed media collage, I create the world as I see it - whimsical, colorful, fun and funny - offering the viewer playful but also profound insights into the essence of humanness and of Life itself.

I am a storyteller. Whether the motif is houses, fish and moons or something more abstract, my work is always a narrative. Houses carry on conversations, learn to dance or how to become transparent. Fish teem in cosmic seas, weaving tales from many moons ago. The story may not always be evident, even to myself, but it is inevitable.

The juror for this exhibit is Puneeta Mittal. Born and raised in India, Puneeta currently resides in NY where she obtained an MA in studio art from Adelphi University and an MFA from Long Island University. She works as an Adjunct Professor of Art and Art History at Adelphi University. Puneeta is a ceramicist, sculptor and painter. Using clay and paint, Puneeta’s work is inspired by the natural sciences and she participates in various shows on Long Island and Manhattan. She is a board member of the Art League of Long Island and the Long Island Craft Guild. Her work can be viewed at www.puneetaart.com.

INDEPENDENCE DAY

"The Signing of the Declaration of Independence - July 4, 1776"

July 4, 1776 - The day the Declaration of Independence was signed - we can only surmise that it had to have been a day of exuberance! A day of gratitude! A day of elation! Yet a sobering experience knowing that from that day forward they would have to do it all on their own. To form a government that was not totalitarian and/or a monarchy. That it was a government, as Abraham Lincoln so poignantly and eloquently phrased during his Gettysburg Address some 100 years later, "....of the people, for the people and by the people..."

The Declaration of Independence was a new beginning, a re-birth of sorts, a 'turning point for humankind' with a government deeply rooted 'in sensitivity to Divine Truth.' It also became a blueprint for moral government that had never before entered the consciousness of nations.

In other words a DEMOCRACY - FREEDOM.

The sacrifices our forefathers had made were insurmountable given the time, the way of life, the primitive technology. All they knew was that they needed to be FREE of the great power of the time - Great Britain - England. But do we all realize the path that was taken prior to that day?! The lives lost in battle, through sickness, through starvation and being frozen were great. Not to mention those who were maimed whether it was due to loss of limb, loss of sight, loss of compassion for their fellow "Americans" and/or loss of mental stability due to the grave circumstances they experienced.

And yes, there were the visionaries, who had a knowing of what was to be and they too bore witness to all the atrocities that took place and having empathy, experienced it all as well as fighting along side their fellow countrymen. Yet they stood tall with bravery and courage, moving forward to run the new country with a new government. They took responsibility for their actions creating one of the greatest powers in the world - the United States of America. Of course they weren't aware of what they had done or started then...Or were they?

A particular event took place while in battle in the dead of winter 1777. General George Washington was beside himself for he did not know how to proceed or how to protect his men from the bitter cold, from starvation - they were facing inhuman odds as the battle of Valley Forge loomed. He being a God fearing man, a believer in a higher being relied on his Faith and began to pray. He knelt down in the snow as his men watched him seeking an answer.

Below is an account of the actual event General Washington experienced. His "colleague and an eyewitness of what took place, Anthony Sherman, recounted the story of Wesley Bradshaw. The oral history was originally published in the "National Tribune," December 1880." Read on...for who knows... (the following was taken from "Angel Power" by Janice T. Connell, 1995, Ballantine Books, New York)

"George Washington. . .would hardly have been the type of man one would expect to be seeking visionary manifestations, or easily be taken in by them. From he opening of the Revolution we experience all phases of fortune, now good and now ill, one time victorious and another time conquered. The darkest period we had, I think was when Washington, after several reverses, retreated to Valley Forge, where he resolved to pass the winter of 1777. Ah! I have often seen the tears course down our dear commander's careworn cheeks, as he would be conversing with confidential officers about the condition of his poor soldiers. You have doubtless heard the story of Washington going to the thicket to pray. It was not only true but he used often to pray in secret for aid and comfort from God, the Interposition of whose Divine Providence brought us safely through the darkest days of tribulation.

One day, I remember it well, the chilly wind whistled through the leafless trees, though the sky was cloudless and the sun shone brightly. He remained in his quarters nearly all afternoon alone. When he came out I noticed that his face was a shade paler than usual, and there seemed to be something on his mind of more than ordinary importance. Returning just after dark, he dispatched an orderly to the quarters of another officer, who was presently in attendance. After a preliminary conversation of about half an hour, Washington, gazing upon us with that strange look of dignity, which he alone could command, said:

'I do not know whether it is owing to the anxiety of my mind, but his afternoon, as I was sitting at this table engaged in preparing a dispatch, something disturbed me. Looking up, I saw standing opposite a singularly beautiful female. So astonished was I, for I had given strict orders not to be disturbed, that it was some moments before I found language to inquire the purpose of her presence. A second, third, even a fourth time did I repeat my question but received no answer from my mysterious visitor, except a slight raising of her eyes. By this time I felt strange sensations spreading through me. I would have risen but the riveted gaze of the being before me rendered volition impossible. I essayed once more to address her, but my tongue had become useless. Even thought itself had become paralyzed. A new influence, mysterious, potent, irresistible, took possession of me. All I could do was to gaze steadily, at my unknown visitor. Gradually the surrounding atmosphere filled with sensation and grew luminous. Everything about me seemed to rarefy, the mysterious visitor herself becoming more airy and yet more distinct to my sight than before. I now began to feel as one dying, or rather to experience the sensation which I have sometimes imagined accompanies dissolution. I did not think, I did not reason, I did not move. all, alike, were impossible. I was conscious only of gazing fixedly at my companion. Presently I heard a voice say,

"Son of the Republic, look and learn!"

while at the same time my visitor extended her arm eastward. I looked and beheld a heavy white vapor rising, at some distance, fold upon fold. This gradually dissipated and I watched before me lay spread out in one vast plain all the countries of the world: Europe, Asia, Africa and America. I saw rolling and tossing between Europe and America, the billows of the Atlantic Ocean, and between America and Asia lay the Pacific.

"Son of the Republic," said the mysterious voice as before, "look and learn."

'At that moment I beheld a dark shadowy being, standing, or rather floating in mid-air between Europe and America. Dipping water out of the ocean with his right hand, he cast it upon America, while that in his left hand went upon the European countries. Immediately a cloud arose from these countries, and joined in mid-ocean. For a while it remained stationary, and then it moved slowly westward, until it enveloped American in its folds. Sharp flashes of lightning gleamed through at intervals; and I heard the smothered groans of the American people. A second time the angle dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it as before. The dark cloud was then drawn back to the ocean, in whose heaving bellows it sank from view. A third time I heard the mysterious voice say:

"Son of the Republic, look and learn."

'I cast my eyes upon America and beheld villages, towns and cities springing up one after another until the whole land, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, was dotted with them. Again I heard the voice say,

"Son of the Republic, the end of the century comes. Look and learn."

And with this the dark, shadowy angel turned its face southward, and from Africa an ill-omened spectra approached our land. It flitted slowly over every town and city of the land. The inhabitants presently set themselves in battle array against each other.

'As I continued to look I saw a bright angel, on whose brow rested a crown of light on which was traced the word UNION, place an American flag between the divided nation and say:

"Remember ye are brethren."

Instantly the inhabitants, casting from them weapons, became friends once more and united around the National Standard. Again I heard the voice of my most beautiful and mysterious visitor say,

"Son of the Republic, look and learn."

At this, the dark shadowy angel placed a trumpet to his mouth and blew three distinct blasts; and taking water from the ocean he sprinkled it upon Europe, Asia and Africa.

'Then my eyes beheld a fearful scene: from each of these countries arose thick black clouds that were soon joined into one. Throughout this mass there gleamed a bright Red Light, by which I saw hordes of armed men, who moving with the cloud, marched by land and sailed by sea to American which country was enveloped in the volume of cloud.

'And I saw these vast armies devastate the whole country and burn the villages, towns and cities that i saw springing up. As my ears listened to the thundering of the cannon, the clashing of the swords, and the shouts and cries of millions in mortal combat, I again heard the mysterious voice say:

"Son of the Republic, look and learn."

As the voice ceased, the bright angel, for the last time, dipped water from the ocean and sprinkled it upon America. Instantly the dark cloud rolled back, together with the armies it had brought, leaving the inhabitants of the land victorious. Once more I beheld villages, towns and cities springing up where I had seen them before; while the bright angel, planting the azure standard he had brought in the middle of them, cried in a loud voice,

"While the stars remain and the heavens send down dew upon the earth, so long shall the Union last."

'And taking from her angelic brow the crown on which was blazoned the word UNION, she placed it upon the National Standard, while people kneeling down, said. Amen.

'The scene instantly began to fade away, and I saw nothing but the rising, curling vapor I had first beheld. This also disappeared and I found myself once more gazing upon the mysterious beautiful visitor who said,

"Son of the Republic, what you have seen is thus: three great perils will come upon the Republic. The most fearful is the third, but the whole world united shall not prevail upon her. Let every child of the Republic learn to live for God, His land and the Union."

'With these words the beautiful visitor and the bright angel accompanying her disappeared from my sight.'

"Such, my friend were the very words I heard from Washington's own lips and America will do well to profit by them," concluded the narrator of this Oral History."

Two hundred thirty four years later we still struggle to keep our freedom in tact. We deal with threats from outside our country as well as threats that have infiltrated our country. We also don't realize how our rights are being slowly changed as laws are passed which are for the good of all. The old saying "it takes only one bad apple..." is the best way to describe the reason for the changes.

Remember the apparition General Washington had...perhaps we are actually partaking in what he had seen more than 240 years ago...perhaps we should re-evaluate some things so that we can have the outcome he was privy to so long ago.

As stated before, "...of course, they didn't know it then the country they formed was the greatest power in the world or did they?"

The "American Scene." Hmmm, could be a farm as depicted in Marcia Wiltsie's "Shabby Sheep" (pictured above;) could be the Empire State building; could be the streets of New York or any other big city as in Laura Hoffman's "Alley Sillhouette Series" (pictured below) in the United States;

could be the Thimble Islands right off of the coast of Connecticut as seen in Rick Senft's oil painting entitled "Thimble Islands" (pictured below;)

or it could just be Any Where, USA or even any living style... These are only a few that have popped into mind, but that is only one's interpretation of the "American Scene."

To see what others perceive to be the "American Scene" you must join us on Thursday, June 24th! Starting at 6:00 pm at Firehouse Gallery (81 Naugatuck Avenue, Walnut Beach - Milford) with an Opening Reception of the exhibit "American Scene." It is a jurried show and will be judged by J. Robert Greiner. Mr. Greiner is a graduate from the University of Nebraska with a B.F.A. in Education. In the U.S. Army he was a graphic artist. After his service he had two years of art training at the Pratt Institute in New York. For 32 years he was employed at Sikorsky Aircraft as a graphic artist. Mr. Greiner has exhibited his acrylic and watercolor paintings, mostly of the New England countryside, in Connecticut and Nebraska.

Afterwards, head down Naugatuck Avenue and turn onto Broadway to grab a bite to eat at Lazy Lobster (6 Broadway), enjoy the eclectic SoBoBo Art Gallery (17 Broadway) and find where unique meets sublime and over 70 local artists reveal their talents! The music of Andrew Hungaski will fill the air as you have a delicious treat from the Walnut Beach Creamery (19 Broadway) to end the evening!

In Retrospect of Memorial Day

In retrospect, Memorial Day is truly a somber day to honor all of our fallen heroes fighting for our freedom, our rights represented by The Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Declaration of Independence - All of which are our guardians, our guides to how we made the United States of America a great country, a great power is what is protected by those who gave their lives defending it all.

In Allan Dudek's "Five Star Flag" (pictured above) he shows us the five branches of the Armed Forces - Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy. "They truly are the stars of our country!"

Our fallen heroes, our military forces have fought for those in the other countries as well who are oppressed and facing genocide but it seems those countries who asked for help don't seem to care we are there, taking for granted our presence and taking what was given them to use against us.

As seen in Allan Dudek's "Class of '42" (below) - his depiction of WWII military personnel, including women, makes one realize the sacrifices our American Armed Forces made during that time. Fighting in Japan, the Philippines, Hawaii (was not part of the United States then), Germany, Northern Africa, Europe, basically the world! trying to stop a one world power, Adolf Hitler. The United States were fighting, at that point, for our lives as well as the lives of the people in the rest of the world.

Since WWII our Armed Forces had responded to South Korea's plight in the 1950's known as the Korean War, losing lives. And then the United States was called on by France in 1959 to help in Vietnam. Once our Armed Forces had entered the fight, France left, leaving it to us. For 12-years we lost many men and women to what seemed to be a never-ending battle. Our men and women were considered and treated less than heroes when they came home in their coffins because of the tone made by those who opposed us being their. It was the first time the private world news media were involved in reporting...it was the beginning of the end of our Armed Forces.

Those men and women who fought in the Vietnam War are heroes and should never be forgotten. They had to endure more than one can ever imagine - from watching in disbelief infants, babies, toddlers children being used as live bombs, to learning a new technique in warfare - jungle warfare; from having to do an 18 month tour to doing more than one consecutive tour (not the 4-6 months done now); from going to Vietnam believing what our government was trying to do after being left in the dust by France and other countries to coming home to be buried in a country who hated them. That alone is the worst, the epitome of feeling like a failure when your own country shuns your son or daughter who gave their life to save the lives of those who were being forced to live a life of oppression.

Please know - NOT EVERYONE HATED YOU!

Now to fast forward to today. Our Armed Forces who are trying to keep order in Iraq, protect and build in Afghanistan have sacrificed their lives for those people being oppressed, killed in genocide killings, being pounced and trampled on by the greed and power of one individual's beliefs, forcing these people to bow to what he/she wants. We have lost many, our hearts and prayers go out to those families who have lost a loved one in these battles. And again it is happening with protests at the funerals of these fallen heroes.

Just remember, NOT EVERYONE HATES YOU!

But what brought us to this day and who actually were the first responders to these horrific acts that perpetrated on our soil? We all remember and will never forget the day that will go down in infamy. The infamous day of September 11, 2001.

September 11, 2001 - First Responders, as they are called, arrived to a pile of melting, twisted steel and iron, glass shatters, papers flying, inhaling deadly, toxic dust from so many different forms of building materials and seeing people jump to their death. The members of the police and fire departments. One must remember, our military forces could not and cannot respond because it is against the law for them to do so on our soil. That is why each state has the National Guard, and the Coast Guard.

Seeing the "The Day The World Cried" by Matt Roe (below) is heart wrenching. It brings back the memories of our schools being locked down, our local and federal buildings being in lock down, a hushed silence falling from the sky as you traveled down the roads to get home, an instinct to gather all family members.

From the beginning, the members of the police and fire departments are the defenders of our soil. Our own terrorist attack by Timothy McVay on the federal building in Ohio, the Waco Texas siege, the bombing of the parking garage at the World Trade Center in 1992, the Fort Hood attack, the attempted, and thankfully failed, bombing in Time Square, the arrest of the terrorist. The recent arrests of those who have tried to blow up planes, area targets of bridges and the list goes on.

Why aren't the First Responders - men and women - who lost there lives included in this day of remembrance? After all, they have given their lives while trying to save the fallen citizens of our country, trying to thwart grievous attacks against us on our soil - they should be remembered on Memorial Day! They have given and sacrificed as our Armed Forces have. It truly is sad to learn that many of those first responders are dying now because of the residual effects of that infamous day of 9/11.

Michael Brotschul's "Night Watch" represents the constant vigilant efforts of our Armed Forces, whether they be policemen, firemen, military personnel. And it is a somber realization they should be remembered always, not just on Memorial Day.

And to think after all of this, someone actually said "Happy Memorial Day!" Remember the Memorial Day parades of yesteryear when they were silent and all you heard was the footsteps of the veterans and active personnel of the armed forces marching, the clicking of the color guards rifles hitting the ground as they did their routine, perhaps you would hear a trumpet in the distance playing taps and then twenty one volleys of fire. A somber day.

Someone actually said "Happy Memorial Day!" You know, though, maybe there is something to this. Perhaps we should re-think it, perhaps we should remember our fallen heroes but yet learn that it is okay to go on and enjoy living, celebrating our freedom, our rights. They fought for us so that we can enjoy life, they fought for us so that we can celebrate life, our freedoms, our rights.

It is okay to be sad because we miss them and they are not here to enjoy the life, the freedoms, the rights they fought for, but don't you think they would rather be remembered in a way by not celebrating their memory in sadness, but to celebrate it with life!

Just a thought...

Starting at 6:00 pm at Firehouse Gallery, 81 Naugatuck Avenue, Walnut Beach - Milford, CT - artists will be interpreting the state of our planet in their own creative way. Everyone on this planet is concerned with the environment and the threat of global warming.

How can we as a people help improve the surroundings of our daily lives and help fight Global Warming?

The mission for the artist was to think of an area that is of most interest to him or her and ideas will emerge for creative expression. It may be in the area of electricity. We get electricity from coal, sun, wind, water, and other alternative energy sources. Agriculture is another area that offers ways to improve the environment. Crops are grown organically and meats and various other foods are produced in organic ways.

The point the artist can present is of ways the average person can help by thinking green – turn off unnecessary lights, use public transportation, recycle, conserve on water and in general don’t be wasteful. These are just a few examples of the way the artist can express an idea pictorially of saving the planet.

All media are accepted – oil, acrylic, pen and ink, pastel, collage, photography, sculptures in stone, clay, wood, paper mache, plaster of paris, or wire.

The juror for the exhibit is artist Kevin Van Aelst. Kevin has a B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University and an M.F.A. from the University of Hartford. He is a professional, very creative photographer.

Presently he is teaching at Quinnipiac University and at the ACES/ Educational Center for the Arts High School Program in New Haven. He has taught at the Hartford Art School, University of Hartford, and the Middlesex Community College and at the Willard Straight Hall Community Darkroom, Cornell University.

Kevin has exhibited his innovative works extensively throughout the area, Massachusetts and New York. His most recent one person show was at the Seton Hall Gallery, University of New Haven, Ct. He has contributed illustrations to several photography magazines. In 2008, he received the Artist Fellowship Grant, Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism and in 2007, he was awarded the Visiting Artist Honorarium, at Southern Connecticut State University.

Afterward, meander on down Naugatuck Avenue to Urban Antique Radio and Vintage Hi-Fi to hear voices from the past. Continue down to Lazy Lobster so that you can enjoy a lobster roll or a cup of lobster bisque and check out Collected Stories for the book you've been trying to find. Saunter across Broadway to SoBoBo Art Gallery and see amazing artwork of local artists and artisans.

Metal Sculptors William Herzfeld and Jon Westberg used found objects, recycling them into works of art! Jan McLean's collages uses scraps of fabric and objects to complete her pieces! Allan Dudek's art takes on it's own personality as he uses pages from telephone books, old maps, re-claimed wood, and other sources.

Luke Lynch and Samantha Hatch went the natural/organic route using turmeric, the juice of beets, and other organic forms to get the dye they needed to create "Prayer Spirals"!

Ren Farnsworth, stained glass artisan, used left over pieces from her projects to produce ornaments to be used as shade pulls and tie backs for curtains! Ren even created beautiful reflective mirrors to be placed under lit candles as a center piece for your table or behind them on a fireplace mantle!

Wood Carvers William Brill, James Dutton and Robert Rahn used pieces of wood to carve master pieces! Mr. Brill's squirrels, fish, and birds are life like! Mr. Dutton's hand carved "Welsh" spoons tell stories of love, commitment, and life. Mr. Rahn's hand skilled wood ornaments are so detailed and finely done you wonder how he did it! Even his plaques are made with different types of wood, they almost look like a puzzle!

When you leave SoBoBo, walk next door to get the most delicious ice cream at Walnut Beach Creamery. The ice cream is made right on the premises! Try it! You'll like it!

A wonderful way to enjoy the evening and bring in the Summer Season!!

"My name is Joyce Densmore - my work background is chemical and mechanical engineering, but I've always had an artistic side to balance my engineering side. Whether it was sewing, smocking, painting porcelain dolls, watercolors, or designing jewelry. With my jewelry, I started out working strictly with pearls, I love the organic look and feel of pearls mixed with just about any other stone . I branched out to copper, brass and sterling after taking a metal-smithing class - I like to cold work metal -- bending, hammering, cutting, rolling (I have this very cool rolling mill!) - I find that metal work is a good blend of art and engineering."
